Feels Like Home

Bear with me while I walk you through my journey to Canada and how I began working at Aequilibrium—a software digital product development and design agency.

First things first: I finished my first degree in Vancouver, attaining my Bachelor of Science with a joint degree in Computer Science and Physics. This coming May marks two years since that milestone. It’s crazy how time flies. I can’t believe it has already been seven years since I came to Vancouver—it truly has become a city I have grown to love. Sure, it does rain a lot here, but on those nice sunny breaks, it makes everything worth it. The mountain peaks, immaculate parks and the clean beaches… it’s safe to say we’re living the life here! After my amazing five years in the city and my first degree in the bag, I decided “Heck, why not?,” and went on to pursue graduate studies instead of entering the “professional world” right away.

Another day in the agency trenches: coding, testing and deploying cutting-edge applications.

Although I was in Vancouver for my studies, I had the opportunity to gain some work experience at a local software development company. Yet, something was telling me I still needed to get out there and see more of the world. I went with my gut instinct and ended up moving to Edinburgh, Scotland to complete my Masters in Artificial Intelligence. Above all, furthering my knowledge in theoretical aspects of this field had always been a big interest of mine. It was time I decided to chase it. Ironically, I couldn’t help but feel stupid at times by having managed to choose a city with worse weather than Vancouver.

It was at the University of Edinburgh where I programmed my first real robot. Simply speaking, it was a robot with a goal of detecting and grabbing small cube objects in a room while using a Kinect-like camera. I specialized in Intelligent Robotics and worked for four months in a robotics lab for my final thesis. Simply speaking again, I got to play with very cool toys.

After I completed my Masters degree, I realized it was time for me to start working. I wanted to work at a smaller sized company as I felt that would be a better fit for my personality.

I’m a strong believer that one should always be happy where they are—if they aren’t, they won’t be able to reach their full potential. However, final exams came to an end and I didn’t have a job waiting for me unlike a lot of my classmates. It hit me then that I had left a very tight-knit group of friends in Vancouver. So last November, I returned back to Vancouver. This is when Aequilibrium and I crossed paths.

I have been at Aequilibrium for just over three months now as a Software Developer. It was here that I met an energetic, forward-thinking group of individuals that just understood technology—they were excited about applications that benefitted users and so was I. The awesome spirit that people encompass at the office allows me to thrive and deliver work of the highest quality. Vancouver is the city where it all started—where I realized I wanted to work on technologies that challenged the way people are used to doings things. Aequilibrium gave me the opportunity to do just that. For me, being here feels like home. It just feels right.
